The Power of Being Intentional: Investing in a Child’s Future

As a PCAT board member, Trevon has watched students grow year after year. His message to families is simple: meaningful change happens when we are intentional about a child’s education—and that commitment doesn’t end at graduation.

TREVON'S STORY

For Trevon, PCAT graduation is more than a celebration. It is a moment for families to recognize just how far their children have come—and the commitment it took to get them there.

As a member of PCAT’s Board of Directors, Trevon has returned year after year to witness that growth firsthand. He has seen students change, alumni continue their educational journeys, and families play an essential role in making that progress possible.

There is one word he believes captures what makes that transformation happen: intentional.

Parents are intentional when they read with their children, make sure reading logs are completed, help with assignments and make education a priority at home. PCAT’s teachers and staff are intentional in the time they spend teaching, encouraging and nurturing students. And the community is intentional when it chooses to support families and invest in their success.

That commitment, Trevon reminds families, cannot end when the school year or a student’s time at PCAT ends.

“In the same way you all have been intentional over this school year, it doesn’t stop today. It doesn’t stop because your students or the children you’re caring for are no longer in PCAT. It’s lifelong.”

He points to PCAT alumni as evidence of what that long-term commitment can mean. Students who once participated in the program are now moving through middle and high school and beginning to think about college and what comes next.

At graduation, Trevon encourages parents to recognize those milestones and truly celebrate them—not simply as another event on the calendar, but as moments families can remember as turning points.

A moment when they committed themselves to education. A moment when they saw the growth. A moment when something began to change for their family.

And then, he says, keep going.

Because helping a child become a successful learner isn’t the work of one school year, one teacher or one program. It is a lifelong commitment made stronger when families, educators and communities choose to be intentional together.

WHY THIS WORK MATTERS

A child’s educational growth does not happen in isolation. Lasting progress is strengthened when families, educators and community leaders intentionally work together—creating an environment where children are supported not only during their time at PCAT, but throughout their learning journey.

“In the same way you all have been intentional over this school year, it doesn’t stop today. It’s lifelong.”
