Sounding Out Success: Early Help for Struggling Readers
February 20, 2026

FOX 13 visited PCAT to see how early literacy intervention is helping young students strengthen foundational reading skills.
Full Story
FOX 13 visited PCAT at Sulphur Springs K–8 Community School to see firsthand how early literacy support is helping young students strengthen their reading skills and build confidence.
The story highlighted an important challenge facing many children: when students struggle with reading in the early years, those difficulties can affect learning across nearly every subject. Through focused support, encouragement and one-on-one attention, PCAT works to help children develop the foundational skills they need to become stronger, more confident readers.
During the visit, FOX 13 captured PCAT students and mentors working together and showed how the program creates an environment where children can receive additional support while discovering that reading can also be engaging and rewarding.
For PCAT, the work goes beyond improving reading skills. Building literacy early can change the trajectory of a child’s education—giving students greater confidence in the classroom and a stronger foundation for the years ahead.
The FOX 13 feature offered the Tampa Bay community a closer look at that work and the people behind it, helping bring greater awareness to PCAT’s mission of supporting children and families throughout Hillsborough County.
WHY THIS WORK MATTERS
Too many children start school without the reading skills they need to succeed. Early intervention changes that trajectory—building strong readers, confident learners, and brighter futures.
Early literacy is the foundation for everything that comes next. When we invest early, children believe in themselves, and in their futures.
